Students learn how to work with people at all different levels of experience on shared goals. A forty something, thirty something and fifteen year old might be meeting to review the data from the school’s most recent online advertising campaign. A five year old will drag an eighteen year old giggling through an epic, nonsensical adventure. On any given day, an eight, thirteen and sixteen year old may associate together over the game they all enjoy. The purpose of staff is to be available for play and conversation, and to offer up their skills and knowledge for whatever comes up! One of our staff member’s likes to refer to this as opening up the “Marketplace of Ideas” Freedom of AssociationĪge mixing is a natural result of the non-hierarchical structure of the school. Students learn how to be lifelong learners who can adapt to their own changing interests and the world around them.

Within the bounds of the school rules, students are free to pursue any activity they choose. Complete Intellectual FreedomĪt the heart of our method are the beliefs that all interests and work have equal value and that children, like all people, learn best when focusing on what interests them. These bodies determine the duties and responsibilities of School Meeting members as well as the bounds of what is acceptable and unacceptable within the school community. The Judicial Committee (and ultimately the School Meeting) is THE authority at the school.
All School Meeting members take turns serving on the Judicial Committee.
When a rule has been broken, peers decide on an appropriate outcome to resolve the issue. All School Meeting members, including staff, are accountable for their behavior and expected to act in accordance with the rules. The Judicial Committee meets daily to respond to issues that are identified by the students and staff. Most of these duties and meetings are voluntary, but there is one democratic meeting–the Judicial Committee–that everyone is routinely required to attend. Students develop the ability to make clear, logical arguments and learn how to deal with complex, ethical issues. Through the back doors is our small back yard, beyond which is our expansive 19 acre extended campus, Patterson Park. Children, young adults, and adults all share the same comfortable space, pursuing their activities individually and in groups. This mode of learning looks very different from other school models. Following the Sudbury model, students from kindergarten through high school take charge of their own education in a compassionate, supportive community.Ĭlearview is a secular private school with accessible tuition and need-based tuition assistance available.
